Black is a Struggle Not a Race by ~strawberry-poo-kmoo:iconstrawberry-poo-kmoo:

Black is a Struggle, Not a Race

Strength.
Focus.
We will never allow ourselves
To be repressed;
To let history repeat itself.

We will succeed
In every possible facet of life.
Material, emotional –
(though principally the former)
That is our perpetual cause.

A big house –
A big “fuck you,”
White man;
It’s all the same.

We are better,
We are stronger.
You’ve never had to
Go through this pain.

Your dreams do not lay
In defeating the majority.
Having your successes spat upon
By the public.

We have so much more potential than you.

So why is it still so hard?

Author's Comments

This is a poem I wrote for English class a few weeks ago, and no, I'm not black. We wrote it after reading "A Raisin in the Sun."

Ideally, the title should have a comma in it, which is why it's reposted at the poem's end. There's another poem in this series (though, not about being black), and if this poem gets good feedback and interest in the other one, I may post it.

(Also, if anyone knows how I could submit this without the annoying preview picture, please tell me.)
